Alexis Bittar
“I was in a store and came up with the idea of fusing the styles of Lalique glass with Bakelite, and using Lucite. It was just a thought, but I followed it through and started carving it by hand in my bedroom. I would have Lucite chips all over the bed, which felt like little pebbles.”
Alexis Bittar launched his eponymous jewelry collections in the early 90’s; but the Brooklyn native’s artistic flair was evident long before then. As a child, Bittar accompanied his parents to flea markets, where they collected and sold rare antiques. At age 22, Bittar began designing and making Lucite and semi-precious jewelry, selling it on the streets of Soho. Bittar’s bold designs quickly caught the eye of store buyers from world-renowned museums, luxury departments stores and high-end specialty boutiques. Described as “one of the most innovative jewelry designers of the 21st century,” his designs act as cult favorites of A-list celebs, including Madonna, Cameron Diaz, Alicia Keyes, as well as influential fashion icons. In 2004, Alexis Bittar won the Accessories Council’s “Rising Star” award and is a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
