Helmut Lang was born in Vienna, Austria in 1956 and is a celebrated fashion designer and artist who now lives in New York. Lang is known for taking materials that some would view as unconventional and putting them into the urban uniform. His work in fashion helped to define the modern silhouette of the 90’s and early 2000’s. Some have called him a deconstructionist, a futurist and even a minimalist but there is no doubt of his influence as he is often copied. Helmut Lang’s artist inside of him has formed collaborations with Jenny Holzer and Louise Bourgeois. His recent works are an exploration of sculpture in fashion and take the lines of the human body to a new plane.
In 1987 he introduced his men’s line, which were shown along with the women’s line in Paris. His work brought back the narrow and tailored suit shown with a white shirt and black tie. In 1990 came some of the work Helmut Lang is most well known for in the fashion world, which is layering of transparent materials and textures into clothing. Then just a few years later the clothes are also layered with extremely shiny fabrics and textures.
A pioneer of fashion in technology he was the first to stray away from the big runway production and actually stream his collection online. In 1999 Prada bought 49% of Helmut Lang’s business and upon not having complete control he left the company. It was then sold in 2006 to Theory Holdings Co, which hired co designers Michael and Nicole Colovos.
